No first job yet? Your cover letter does not have to start with an apology

A blank employment section can make every sentence feel difficult. Yet a first-job application is not a competition to invent the longest work history. It is a chance to explain why the role interests you, what you have already learned and which examples show that you can take responsibility for a task.

Look for evidence outside paid employment

Study projects, volunteering, clubs and personal work can contain relevant examples. Organising an event might involve coordinating people and checking details. A coursework project might show research, written communication or using a particular tool. Describe the setting plainly. A college assignment can be useful evidence without being presented as a client project or professional employment.

Choose an example that connects to the vacancy rather than listing every activity you remember. If you are unsure how to begin the letter, the CV Majster guide to cover letters without experience is a place to explore a structure that keeps your interest and supporting evidence close together.

Make the letter answer a different question from the CV

Your CV records education, activities and skills. The letter can explain why those details matter for this particular role. Name the job, give a specific reason for your interest and expand on one relevant example. Avoid copying the entire document into paragraphs. The two pieces should support each other while giving the reader different useful information.

For each claim, ask what a reader could reasonably ask you next. If you call yourself organised, be ready to describe how you planned a task and dealt with a change. If you say you learn quickly, point to something you practised and completed. Keep examples modest enough to be accurate and concrete enough to discuss.

Finish with a careful application check

Use the employer's instructions to decide which documents to send and in what format. Check the company name, role title, contact details and attachment before pressing send. A copied letter with the wrong employer named is an avoidable mistake. Read the final version aloud to find sentences that sound formal but do not actually say anything.

You do not need to pretend you already know every part of the job. Show the abilities you can support, explain your interest and be clear about your starting point. That creates a more credible application than apologising repeatedly for missing experience or promising that you can immediately perform work you have not yet learned.
