How to write a choreographer CV

Professional summary

Write which productions you create choreography for, for how long and in which style. Add which companies you work with and whether you also prepare stage movement for actors. If you have awards or well-known productions, mention them in your summary.

Dancer and young choreographer with experience in a contemporary dance company. I have created choreography for two independent productions and three music videos. I am looking for work as an assistant choreographer at a musical theatre.

Experience: duties and achievements

Describe productions, their type, the size of the company and your role. Show your work with the director, the producer and artists. If you have assisted other choreographers, list it, because it is the typical path to working on your own.

Weaker: Creating choreography.

Better: Choreography for 4 musical productions at repertory theatres.

Weaker: Working with dancers.

Better: Routines for TV entertainment shows, working with a company of up to 30 dancers.

Weaker: Assisting.

Better: Assisting the choreographer and restaging choreography with new casts.

Skills worth listing

List styles, types of productions, leading rehearsals and auditions. In your soft skills show leadership and communication, because a choreographer leads a company and must say clearly what they want.

Professional skills

  • Choreography
  • Stage movement
  • Leading rehearsals
  • Auditions
  • Dance styles
  • Teaching

Personal skills

  • Leadership
  • Clear communication
  • Creativity
  • Work organisation
  • Working to tight deadlines

Workshops and awards

List your studies, choreography workshops with the names of the teachers and festival awards. A portfolio with recordings matters more than a list of diplomas, so add a link.

Choreographer CV with no experience

Describe routines for a dance school, a group, competitions and your own projects. Record them and add a link to your portfolio.

Start as an assistant choreographer. Write which productions you have danced in, because it shows that you know company work from the inside.

Tailoring your CV to the job offer

A musical theatre looks for choreography for productions and work with a large company, a TV production for creating routines quickly, and a record label for choreography for music videos and tours. Move to the top what the job is about.
