Mathematician CV: example and template
This example is for mathematicians working at banks, insurance companies, analytics teams, technology companies and universities, and for mathematics graduates looking for their first job outside teaching.
The employer wants to know which methods you know, which programming languages you use, which models you build and what they are for. We show you how to describe this on your CV in language that business understands.
How to write a mathematician CV
Professional summary
Write which problems you solve with mathematics, in which sector and with which tools. Instead of a list of branches of mathematics show applications, for example forecasts, risk models or optimisation. Add programming languages, because without them it is hard to get analytical work today.
Applied mathematics graduate with a placement in a bank's analytics department. I know statistics, regression and time series and programme in Python and SQL. I want to work in risk modelling or data analysis.
Experience: duties and achievements
Describe models, methods, data and results. Show the business impact, for example a better forecast, time saved or a board decision. Add validation and documentation, because in finance they are a supervisory requirement.
Weaker: Modelling.
Better: Models forecasting claims in motor insurance.
Weaker: Reports.
Better: Automating reports in Python, saving about 2 days of work a month.
Weaker: Analyses.
Better: Reserve calculations and sensitivity tests for the actuarial department.
Skills worth listing
List methods, tools and types of models. In your soft skills show logical thinking and the ability to explain results to people without a mathematical background.
Professional skills
- Statistics and modelling

- Python and R
- SQL
- Forecasting
- Model validation
Personal skills
- Logical thinking
- Accuracy
- Explaining results
- Independence
- Curiosity
Qualifications
List actuarial exams, machine learning courses and data analysis certificates. Success in mathematical olympiads and competitions is also worth adding, especially early in your career.
Mathematician CV with no experience
Describe your thesis, projects, competitions and programming. Add placements and data projects, even from classes.
Mathematicians work in finance, insurance, IT, logistics and research. Choose a sector and tailor your examples to it.
Tailoring your CV to the job offer
A bank or an insurer looks for risk modelling and validation, a technology company for machine learning and programming, and logistics for optimisation. Move to the top what the job ad is about. In a job ad for a maths teacher, on the other hand, teaching qualifications, pupils' results and classroom work count, so that version of your CV should look completely different from a CV for a bank.
Questions and answers
What should a mathematician put on a CV?

Where does a mathematician work?
At banks, insurance companies, technology companies, in data analysis, logistics, research and schools.
Does a mathematician need to programme?
In analytical work almost always, yes. Python, R and SQL are the most often required.
Should you put a mathematical olympiad on your CV?
Yes, especially early in your career. It is proof that you can solve hard problems.
