Software developer CV: example and template

This example is for developers who build business applications, systems and services, for example in C# and .NET, Java or Python, and for juniors after a course or university.

A technical recruiter and a team lead want to see technologies, projects and results, not a list of every tool. We show you how to write a CV that gets through an ATS and interests the team.

How to write a software developer CV

Professional summary

In the first sentences, give your main technology, years of experience, the type of systems and the industry. Add one thing that sets you apart, such as performance, architecture or mentoring others.

Junior Python developer after a computer science degree and an internship at an e-commerce company. I built APIs in Django, wrote tests and worked with Git in a team. My projects are on GitHub.

Experience: duties and achievements

For each role, describe the product, your part in it and the result. Numbers such as speed, number of users or test coverage say more than technology names repeated in every bullet.

Weaker: Programming in .NET.

Better: Developing a fleet management system used by 40 transport companies.

Weaker: Working with the database.

Better: Optimising SQL queries, cutting report time from 40 to 6 seconds.

Weaker: Writing tests.

Better: Unit and integration tests, coverage of key modules above 80%.

Skills worth listing

Group your technologies and list only those you have really worked with. A technical interview will include questions about each of them. Under personal skills, show teamwork and communication.

Professional skills

  • Main language and framework
  • Databases
  • APIs and integrations
  • Automated testing
  • Git and CI/CD
  • Cloud and containers

Personal skills

  • Working in a Scrum team
  • Explaining solutions clearly
  • Independence
  • Code review and sharing knowledge
  • Problem solving

Certificates and projects

Cloud and technology certificates help, but projects matter more. Add a link to GitHub or a portfolio with code you can show. For code from work, describe the project without revealing confidential information.

Junior developer CV

Describe 2 or 3 projects from a course, university or your own: what they do, in what technology and what was hardest. Add a link to the repository with a clear description.

List internships, placements and hackathons. Show that you can work with Git and tests, because these are the basics every company asks about.

Tailoring your CV to the job offer

A software house looks for quickly joining different projects, a product company for ownership of one system, and a bank for knowledge of security and processes. Order your technologies and projects as in the job ad to get through the ATS.

The most common mistakes on a software developer CV

Questions and answers

What should a software developer put on a CV?

Your main technology, years of experience, projects with results, technologies grouped by area, testing, tools, certificates, a GitHub link and English.

How long should a developer CV be?

Usually 1 or 2 pages. Describe older and less important projects briefly.

Should a junior add GitHub to a CV?

Yes, if it has projects with clear descriptions. It is the best proof of skills for a recruiter.

Should I give levels for technologies?

You can group them into main and supporting. Avoid stars and bars, because they say little.
