Career counselor CV: example and template

This example is for career counselors at job centres, schools, university careers offices, consultancies and employment activation projects, and for people who have completed postgraduate studies in career guidance.

The employer wants to know who you work with, which methods and tools you use, how many guidance sessions and workshops you run and what their results are. We show you how to describe this on your CV in specific terms, not only as general "supporting clients".

How to write a career counselor CV

Professional summary

Write who you work with, at which institution and with which methods. Add the number of guidance sessions or workshops and results if you know them, for example clients starting a job or training. Mention your qualifications, because schools and job centres require them.

Education graduate who has completed postgraduate studies in career guidance. On my placement at a careers office I ran consultations for students and CV writing workshops. I want to work as a career counselor at a school or a job centre.

Experience: duties and achievements

Describe client groups, the number of sessions, methods and assessment tools. Show results, for example the number of people who found a job or training. Add work with employers, because a counselor who knows the labour market is more valuable.

Weaker: Guidance for clients.

Better: One-to-one guidance for about 40 people a month.

Weaker: Tests.

Better: Assessing career interests and aptitudes with tests and interviews.

Weaker: Workshops.

Better: Group workshops on writing a CV, job interviews and looking for work.

Skills worth listing

List methods, assessment tools, forms of work and labour market knowledge. In your soft skills show listening, empathy and motivating, because a counselor's clients are often discouraged.

  • One-to-one guidance
  • Group workshops
  • Assessment tools
  • Action plans
  • Labour market
  • Records

Personal skills

  • Listening
  • Empathy
  • Motivating
  • Leading a group
  • Patience

Qualifications and training

List a degree or postgraduate studies in career guidance, career coaching courses and training in assessment tools. At a school a career counselor is a teacher, so also give your teaching qualification.

Career counselor CV with no experience

Describe placements at a careers office, a job centre or a school, volunteering and projects with young people. Add workshops you have run, even during your studies.

Write which group you want to work with. Guidance for pupils, students and unemployed people needs different skills.

Tailoring your CV to the job offer

A job centre looks for work with unemployed people and action plans, a school for classes with pupils and a teaching qualification, and an outplacement firm for work with managers and labour market knowledge. Move to the top what the job ad is about.
