How to write a production manager CV

Professional summary

Give the industry, the size of the team, the number of shifts and the most important results. A production manager is held accountable for the plan, quality, cost and safety, so show in your summary that you think in these terms.

Shift manager with 5 years of experience in a food plant. I lead a team of 45 people and am responsible for meeting the plan and hygiene standards. Last year I cut raw material losses by 12%.

Experience: duties and achievements

In this position, duties alone say nothing, because every manager supervises production. Show the change you made: indicators before and after, rollouts, the number of people you developed. If the data is confidential, give percentages instead of amounts.

Weaker: Supervising production.

Better: Raising the OEE of the welding lines from 68% to 79% in two years.

Weaker: Looking after quality.

Better: Reducing internal scrap from 2.1% to 0.9% through standardized work.

Weaker: Managing people.

Better: Developing 3 operators into shift leaders and keeping staffing stable in a department of 140.

Skills worth listing

Combine technical skills (processes, lean tools, systems) with management skills. For lean tools, say what you did with them, not just that you know them.

Professional skills

  • Production planning and reporting
  • OEE, KPIs, downtime analysis
  • Lean tools: 5S, SMED, kaizen, VSM
  • Quality management, root cause analysis
  • ERP and MES systems
  • Health and safety and occupational risk assessment

Personal skills

  • Leadership and team building
  • Making decisions under time pressure
  • Conflict resolution
  • Communication with the board and support departments
  • Consistency in implementing change

First management position in production

If you are moving up from operator or team leader, describe the tasks you have already taken on: standing in for the supervisor, training new people, taking part in improvement projects, reporting shift results.

Show that you know production from the inside and have the team's respect. Add management and lean training if you have completed it.

Tailoring your CV to the job offer

An automotive plant will ask about quality standards and lean, food production about hygiene and line efficiency, and a small company about flexibility and knowing many processes at once. Order your achievements so that the first ones answer the problems in the job ad.

Questions and answers

What achievements should a production manager put on a CV?

Changes in indicators (OEE, productivity, scrap, downtime), improvements implemented, better safety, developing people and meeting the plan. Ideally with values before and after.

Does this example work for a production supervisor CV?

Yes. A supervisor and a shift manager describe the same areas, just on a smaller scale: one shift, a smaller team, specific lines.

How many pages should a production manager CV have?

Two pages is a good standard for longer experience. You can describe your oldest positions in one sentence.
