How to write a sales assistant CV

Professional summary

Say what kind of retail you have experience in (grocery, clothing, electronics, DIY), how long you have been working and what you do best: advising, selling, keeping things tidy and looking after stock. Three sentences are enough. Add what matters to you, for example a stable job or growing toward a management position.

Sales assistant with 3 years of experience in a DIY store. I advise customers on choosing materials and tools, operate the till and the terminal and receive deliveries. I enjoy working with people and want to grow in the technical advice department.

Experience: duties and achievements

A sales assistant's duties are similar in many shops, so the details make you stand out: how many customers you serve, which products you know, whether you cash up, whether you train new people. If the shop had sales targets, say how you met them. If not, show responsibility, for example a till with no discrepancies or taking part in stocktakes.

Weaker: Customer service.

Better: Advice and sales in the electronics department, around 80 customers a day, add-on sales of accessories and warranties.

Weaker: Working on the till.

Better: Operating the cash register and the terminal, cashing up with no discrepancies for a whole year.

Weaker: Stocking shelves.

Better: Displaying and rotating products according to the planogram, checking expiry dates, fewer losses on expired products.

Skills worth listing

Retail employers most often look for people who talk well with customers, are not afraid of the till and are available. List technical skills such as stock management software or the till specifically, because they shorten onboarding.

Professional skills

  • Operating a cash register and a card terminal
  • Add-on sales and product advice
  • Merchandising and product displays
  • Receiving deliveries, stocktaking
  • Handling complaints and returns
  • Stock and sales software

Personal skills

  • Friendliness and patience with customers
  • Staying calm in disputes
  • Honesty and responsibility for the till
  • Teamwork and shift work
  • Learning a new product range quickly

Certificates and training

If you sell food, the employer usually requires a valid sanitary and epidemiological certificate. If you have one, put it on your CV, because it saves time in hiring. Also add customer service or sales training organized by a previous employer.

Sales assistant CV with no experience

Retail is a common first job, so employers understand a lack of experience. Write about casual and seasonal work, volunteering, placements at a commerce school or helping in a family shop.

Emphasize what is hard to teach: punctuality, politeness and willingness to work weekends. A short sentence about why you want to work with customers is often more convincing than a long list of qualities.

Tailoring your CV to the job offer

Check what kind of shop it is and what it is looking for. In a drugstore, knowledge of cosmetics helps; in an electronics store, knowledge of equipment; in a DIY store, knowledge of materials. Move experience from similar retail to the top and use words from the job ad, for example add-on sales, meeting targets, displays.

Sales assistant, cashier or customer advisor?

Job titles in retail vary, and the scope of work overlaps. Keep the title from your contract on your CV, but describe everything you did: if you were a cashier but also advised customers on the shop floor, say so. If you are mainly looking for work at the checkout, see also the cashier resume example, and if you advise on more expensive products, the customer advisor resume example.
